Grand Lake Theatre - A Century of Cinema
Project Type: Brand Identity & Interactive Illustration
Role: Lead Designer / Motion Designer
The Overview
As an Oakland-based designer, I wanted to honor the 100-year legacy of the Grand Lake Theatre, a movie theater I grew up going to as a kid and still go to today. This project is a technical revival of its iconic Art Deco marquee, translating the physical soul of vintage neon into a high-performance, interactive digital asset.
The Problem
Despite being a 100-year-old Art Deco masterpiece, the Grand Lake Theatre lacked a cohesive digital identity. The existing online presence failed to capture the magic, energy, or historic vibrancy of the theater. To put it bluntly: the old site looked like it was made 20 years ago, it is dated, but not in a cool or intentional way. The challenge was to bridge that gap: creating a modern, high-performance interface that feels as electric as standing under the marquee on a Saturday night.
The Solution
I designed a clean yet historic visual system that honors the theater’s Art Deco heritage while providing the technical flexibility needed for the next 100 years.
The 1 centenarian Mark: To celebrate the 100-year anniversary, I developed a commemorative brand extension. This wasn't just a logo change; it was a rhythmic visual language applied across social assets and web headers to signal a new era for the cinema.
Narrative Merchandise: I translated the "Clean-Grit" aesthetic into physical goods. By focusing on the theater's unique architectural details (like the firelamps and ornate typography), I designed a merch line that feels like a "piece of Oakland history" rather than a standard souvenir.
The Color System: Neighborhood Warmth
The palette is a direct reflection of the theatre’s physical presence in Oakland. It is designed to mirror the shift from the deep, cinematic shadows of the interior to the electric vibrancy of the exterior marquee.
Marquee Crimson (#f04b4f): Sampled directly from the theatre’s iconic red neon tubes. This color provides the "energy" and "vibrancy" that was missing from the theatre's previous digital presence.
Wurlitzer Gold (#fec13b): Inspired by the warmth of the vintage incandescent bulbs that have illuminated the Grand Lake corner for a century. This isn't just a highlight color; it’s the "hum" of the theatre made visible.
Cinema Ink (#000000): A deep, rich black that serves as the "Grit" to the palette’s "Clean" highlights. It provides the necessary high-contrast foundation for the neon elements to truly glow.
